About me...
My name is Viviane. I'm living near Brussels - Belgium. Every day I spend a lot of time to my 'hobby'. I love all kind of textiles ..... from designing, creating, trying out old and new methods, as well in patchwork & quilting, as in crochet, cro-tat (frivolité au crochet), embroidery, knitting .... as long as I can play with threads, I'm happy ! I've just published a book on cro-tat (in French) to explain this old and easy kind of lacemaking. You'll notice that this blog is part in English, Dutch and French, a cheerful mix just like the real life in Belgium. Oohh, I almost forgot to tell you that on top of all this, I'am addicted to Belgian chocolates and "macarons" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm desperately looking for days of 36 hours....so if you find a shop selling time : tell me !!
Save the Earth !! It's the only planet with chocolates ...
One of life's mysteries is how 100 gr of chocolates can make a woman gain 1 kilo

pulls

Enfilez donc vos petites laines !!!

Old stuff <> New stuff ....

I'll present you my second "old" book ... also from Phildar ...
and yes,
this one is really old,
because my mum and I used it so many times
that the binding got loose

IMG_7069

And there are so many things to make ...
still very actual and uptodate if you don't look to close to the backgrounds of the pics,  although ....

look at these coverlets

IMG_7073

This blue room does not look 'out of fashion' ....

And these bright colored rooms ?

IMG_7074IMG_7075

They did love pink in the seventies !!!

IMG_7160IMG_7163

IMG_7071

Okay, the last photo ... looks like taken in a sauna ;-), but I made that coverlet
long, long, long time ago
(it does not exist anymore),
and it was in green shades.

Don't you think  they all would fit in our kids room today ?

And for the kitchen ...

If you look to all the potholders in blogs-of-today .... you'll recognize that these are not so 'old fashion' as the book cover !

IMG_7077

And those lampshades : I made the one  in the right corner and kept it for years....also in green shades

and now I'm wondering why I bought one shade recently to fit my new lamp ....
could have made one with all the wool kept in my cupboard ...

IMG_7072

IMG_7076

And the last pic I selected from this book :

A cushion with knitted leafs and crochet flowers appliqued on a background...

IMG_7161

I'm looking to the next one to see which pics might be  interesting ...

petite tentation

bus crochet ~ crochet bus - part 2

And I had plenty little squares,
and I started to assemble them,
and ...
I didn't like the result ...

IMG_7135

There were to many big holes between all my little grannys...
so I left it a day on the corner of my table,
and another day,
and looked at it,
and thought and medidated ...
and still love the colors ...

IMG_7137

And I decided to set all my little squares free again ....

and so I'll finish my week-end with this :
a beautiful pile of little squares

IMG_7019

Nevertheless,
 I finished already this phone-pouch
that goes with it ...

IMG_7133

Made in tunisian crochet,
with a hooked grip ...
so I still have some result of my work with this beautiful wool !

IMG_7134

my squares ?
I might make some more ...
and join them at the 4 corners,
but then it wouldn't be so airy as I planned....

Think I'll wait a little,

who knows if time will bring me the solution ...

wiggly crochet

In reaction for my 'kitschy' cushion at my crochet-starter-period .... her's the link for a visual demo on YouTube posted in july 2009 by Teresa -->      and she's got also a blog with a lot of tips and tricks,  demo's for all kind of crochet-stitches, also with the YouTube films on it.  It's so well explained and visually really clear and thus very nice for starters !

For those who prefer to crochet with a hook that has a grip, but still want to keep their old fine ones : look at how Teresa makes those grips to adapt on yours !

Unfortunately, the only book I found that describes wiggly crochet   (...a 3-D crochet that was popular in the 50's for hot pads because the thickness of the final product made it a good insulator)
is out of sale (snif, snif...)
It's one of Nancy Nehring, author of several crochet books

Paperback: 32 pages Publisher: American School of Needlework (October 2, 2006) ISBN-10: 1590121791 ISBN-13: 978-1590121795

At Annie's Attic, they have  this booklet with 5 projects :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so if you want something with bright colors, very hip and actual,
you'll have to buy the 'hip to hook'  by Sarah London !!

New Stuff <=> Old Stuff ??

hookcover

You know me,  I surf and zap on the waves of blogs and sites,
and ... suddenly I   'flash' on
an item ... like this one  !
Follow this link to get to the blog of
Sarah London  .

Why this picture attracted me so  ???
Because I made a cushion like this,    so many years ago  !!
o-) I'm feeling not so young anymore ... only just  for a minute, don't worry,

but then I remember how proud I was that
I could put a cushion of me in the seat of my father.
My mum didn't love it all,
it was in a horrible blue and yellow ...
she found it kitshy,
and probably thought I would keep it in my own room ;-)
but, knowing that she gave me that wool ....
So for several months the cushion was tolerated in the beige-brown-tan livingroom.

(what we all do for our kids ... you also recognize this compulsion  ?)

The more, I got the pattern from a book of hers !! It's this one from Phildar (I've got the french version)

phildar

Here's a close-up of the big cushion

1

&  this is  'How it's made'

4

In this magazine, they spend a whole part on different manners to work with hooked-grids : embroidering, weaving, hooking (crochet !!),...

2

3

And then I realize - once again - that all things are coming back,
that 'history repeats for ever' ,
that  patterns are adapted from decade to decade,
that we just use some newer and fancier materials,
but that the essence is staying the same ....

And don't think that everything of this book is dated ! Not at all !

Look at these ... a lot of little pompons for a soft cushion,  which is  do-able for kids :
they can have a lot of fun making their one cushion !

5

But with this baby-blanket ...
oh NO :  I find it ugly ;-)

Never will I  make it !
Even if pompons are so soft and appealing to hug ...

IMG_7096

On the other hand,   these  hooked ribbons are making a nicer summer curtain or insect screen than those in plastic .
This would be gorgeous in vivid colors !!!
I still have so many wool left .... maybe this summer ??
If I only could find some more time for all these projects  !;?!,  but maybe one of you will make one ?? and send me a pic ??

6

And what do you think of these little cute knittted  "Babe's" ???

IMG_7098

Or some other farm - animals ...

IMG_7099IMG_7100

Of  course many other patterns and pictures are not so 'modern' ... in this book with knitted and hooked  "specimen".
You've got also pictures which are really looking from last century ...
But imagine it on your modern couch, in other colors, in new threads like bamboo or silk ...

IMG_7101

Kind of Cat looks still same as in these days .....

If you're interested in more from this book, but only for own use - not commercial ! - you can always send me an e-mail (click on contact button left), and I'll scan it in for you ...

And because I've been searching in old books for this wobble cushion, I'll post some extracts from other OLD books and magazines in next days.
Some are hilarous ...
Some are interesting because of the history. Some ....

Have a nice day !
