Here are some more pictures of our national exhibition at Edingen. It’s over - again - for a year …

We had a competition: embroidery and patchwork, so we wanted to encourage the embroiderers to combine their work with quilts and the quilters to try on some embroidery.

Two categories and the quilter herself had to choose in which one she entered her work: hand-embroidery or machine embroidery. The piecing-appliqué-quilting could be hand or machine or combination of both, but it was the embroidery that prevailed for entering in one or other category. About 90 quilters of our members (only members, because the quilters guild takes everything in charge for insurance, transportation, exhibit the quilts etc…. and so in the membership’s fee is included this opportunity -among many other privileges for only 25,00 € a year!). Surprisingly we had only 6 entries in the machine category, and looking closely, they were machine quilted, not that much machine embroidered – and thus not enough to keep a separate category. So for the jury, only the theme “embroidery patchwork” was held to choose the winner.

Composing a jury is not an easy decision in Belgium: the guild searches for 2 Dutch speaking quilters (teachers, with a lot of experience…) & 2 French speaking quilters (to prevail the impartiality and not creating a ‘linguistic problem’ like our politicians often do …). The fifth member of the jury does not have to be a quilter, but yet somebody in the art-world (sculptor, painter,…). That gives us an independent impartial jury of 5 people. They have each a form where they quote each quilt, only numbered, no names are shown, on different parts or sections (like the quality of binding, quilting, sewing, the color-balance, the respect of theme, etc…) They don’t have an easy job, I can tell! Finally, all the points are added and the winner is known.

It’s the first year of all our competitions in the past, that the results were sooooo close!

First prize: 89 points, second and third ex aequo: 88 points, fourth: 87, fifth: 85 points, sixth: 84 points, seventh: 82 points, eight: 81 points, nine and tenth ex aequo: 80 points.  Can you imagine the quality of these ten quilts? Only 9 points difference between first and tenth!!!
     Fantastic.
That says a lot of the quality of our Belgian quilters
    J !!!

They’ll be soon with many other pictures of the show on our website: so keep an eye on www.belgiumquilt.be in the next couple of days!

And then … the other quilts, from members all over the country and outside (yes we do have members living out Belgium!!): big quilts, smaller ones, monochrome colors, bold and vivid colored quilts, modern and contemporary, classical piecing, appliqué with cotton, wool or other materials … there was something for everyone.
We have generally also the EQA collection from all the countries, a yearly challenge were every quilter/member can enter a little quilt – if there are more than the required number, the management of the guild chooses which ones are making a total global nice quilt and so we showed the little triangles that makes hexagons from all the European countries of the EQA. People having possibility to go to Birmingham, Val d’Argent, l’Aiguille en Fête or other international fairs, might have seen them before.

The quilts showed in the castle were separate collections from international quilters, international travelling collections … a delight for the eye of the visitors.

  • quilters day 2013

Saturday was our annual region-day for the province of Flemish-Brabant & Brussels and we were 87 quilters gathered together for a day full of activities and quilting of course. Chris (for the last time, she’s leaving her place for someone else) and Rita and I welcomed the guests with a beautiful day-planning.
The preparations soon in the morning: the four outlet-sales-stands we invited to sell their fabrics, material at an interesting price; they all arrived with a lot of stuff and they all went back with little left in the boxes!

This means that the bags of our quilters were filled J

    1-2013-05-27.jpg

Our preparations to make the room ready with the black Association shopping bags filled with information for the next year-activities and this bag will be our 2014 challenge; the last paper details to review; the tables and chairs are set; and the entrance is blocked till 15 minutes before opening (they all arrive so early!).

    1-2013-05-271.jpg

This is how it looked when everyone was inside – when a chair is empty, you’ll have to search for that person in the shopping area or at the demonstration stand.

    1-2013-05-272.jpg

We had a contest: “make the most beautiful placemat”    and this is a selection of it.

    1-2013-05-273.jpg

And these are the four winners – public’s choice! (one winner and three ex-aequo on the second place)

    1-2013-05-274.jpg

A close view on the demo-stand: all Christmas ornaments made by Chris and Rita and explained so that everyone can already start with the projects and finish it on time.

    1-2013-05-275.jpg

Of course we provided some food J

    1-2013-05-276.jpg

And there was a beautiful show & tell with wonderful quilts.

    1-2013-05-278.jpg

    1-2013-05-279.jpg

Ant the last event of the day is the lottery and we had a lot of books, fabrics, haberdashery, threads, all kind of stuff quilters never have enough of.

    1-2013-05-280.jpg

    So that was an awesome day. Every year we grow : 2009 = 50 participants; 2010 = 60; 2011 = 64; 2012 = 75 and now in 2013 = 87!
This gives us such a good feeling!
Maybe next year we’ll be with 100
J (that’s the maximum for that room allowed).
